A HAZAI TEJTERMELŐ TEHENÉSZETEKBEN ALKALMAZOTT TARTÁS- ÉS ÜZEMELTETÉSTECHNOLÓGIÁK ÉRTÉKELÉSE AgEcon
Atkos, Istvan.

Animal models of anxiety: an ethological perspective BJMBR
In the field of anxiety research, animal models are used as screening tools in the search for compounds with therapeutic potential and as simulations for research on mechanisms underlying emotional behaviour. However, a solely pharmacological approach to the validation of such tests has resulted in distinct problems with their applicability to systems other than those involving the benzodiazepine/GABAA receptor complex. In this context, recent developments in our understanding of mammalian defensive behaviour have not only prompted the development of new models but also attempts to refine existing ones. The present review focuses on the application of ethological techniques to one of the most widely used animal models of anxiety, the elevated plus-maze...

Application of basic concepts in ethology in the feline veterinary medicine MV&Z
Genaro, Gelson.
The study of Ethology has grown in the Veterinary Medicine, and nowadays it can be observed a considerable increase in the number of domestic cats in our society. These points highlight the importance of studying this animal from an ethologic point of view. The professional should alert the owner about the behavioural aspects and thoroughly discuss what to expect from a companion animal, minimizing the possibilities of conflicts among them, which can lead to abandonment. The knowledge of the behavioural characteristics, as well as the development of the animal will help for the prevention of future problems.

Attack behavior of Podisus rostralis (Heteroptera: Pentatomidade) adults on caterpillars of Bombyx mori (Lepidoptera: Bombycidae) BABT
Lemos,Walkymário Paulo; Zanuncio,José Cola; Serrão,José Eduardo.
Attack behavior of the predator Podisus rostralis (Stäl) (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) adults on fourth instar Bombyx mori L. (Lepidoptera: Bombycidae) caterpillars was studied in laboratory conditions. Ten 24 hours old adults of this predator were observed during two hours with the following attack behavior: (1) Predator: prey finding; prey observation; touching prey with antenna; attack behavior; prey paralysis; predator retreat after attack; attack cessation; successive attacks; and (2) Prey: defense. The predator P. rostralis found its prey before attacking and it approached it with slow circular movements. The attack was usually made in the posterior part of the prey to reduce defense reaction. Larger size of prey in relation to the predator resulted...

Santos,Tatiany Carvalho dos; Gates,Richard Stephen; Tinôco,Ilda de Fátima Ferreira; Zolnier,Sérgio; Baêta,Fernando da Costa.
Abstract: The objective of this work was to evaluate the combined effects of air temperature and air velocity on the behavior of Japanese quail (Coturnix coturnix japonica). A total of 216 Japanese quail in their initial laying phase were used. Bird behavior was categorized with an ethogram (eat, drink, stop, open wings/shiver, others). The experimental design was a randomized complete block, in a 4x4 factorial arrangement, with four air velocities (0, 1, 2, and 3 m s-1) and air temperatures (17, 23, 29, and 35°C). The behavior “stop” was greater when the birds were subjected to 17°C. At 35°C, a significant reduction (p<0.05) was observed in the behavior “eat” at 0 m s-1, compared with the other velocities. The behaviors of laying quail are similar in...

Comparative study of the nesting behaviour of Tachysphex inconspicuus (Kirby) (Hymenoptera: Crabronidae) in two locations in southeast Brazil Neotropical Entomology
Buys,Sandor C..
The nesting behaviour of the solitary wasp Tachysphex inconspicuus (Kirby) was comparatively studied based on observations made in two environmentally distinct locations in southeast Brazil: upper portions of two sandy beaches and a dirt road in a forested area. Motor patterns related to nest construction were similar in all observed wasps, but some behavioural features, which were different among the observed wasps in the two environments, seem to be constrained by ecological factors. T. inconspicuus can be behaviourally differentiated from several other species of the genus by the following combination of features: they close the nest temporarily during its provision, do not let the excavated sand to form into a mound in front of the nest entrance,...

Daily and seasonal activity patterns of free range South-American rattlesnake (Crotalus durissus) Anais da ABC (AABC)
TOZETTI,ALEXANDRO M.; MARTINS,MARCIO.
This study aimed at describing daily and seasonal variation in the activity of a population of South-American rattlesnakes (Crotalus durissus) in a savanna like habitat (Cerrado) in Southeastern Brazil. Seasonal and daily activities of snakes were evaluated by the number of captures of snakes during road surveys, accidental encounters, and relocations by radio-tracking. Our results show that climatic variables such as air temperature and rainfall have little influence on the activity pattern of rattlesnakes. Our findings indicate that rattlesnakes spend most of the day resting and most of the night in ambush posture. The South-American rattlesnake is active throughout the year with a discrete peak in activity of males during the matting season. The...

Death-feigning behaviour in Iphisa elegans: the second reported case in the Family Gymnophthalmidae (Reptilia: Squamata) Acta Amazonica
MACHADO-FILHO,Paulo Roberto; MOYA,Guilherme Marson; MAFFEI,Fábio.
ABSTRACT Death-feigning behaviour occurs when the animal simulates a state of immobility. This behaviour is described for some lizard families, among them the family Gymnophthalmidae with only one record. Iphisa elegans is a diurnal and terrestrial Amazonian gymnophtalmid lizard. It has cryptic behavior and moves rapidly on the ground, hindering observations of its behavior. We report a case at the Comodoro Municipality, Mato Grosso State, Brazil. An adult male of I. elegans, when manipulated, turned its venter up and put itself in a death-feigning posture. This species is preyed upon by birds, snakes and other lizards¸ possibly behaving this way when the cryptic behaviour or escape attempt fails. More studies are necessary to evaluate the efficiency of...

Oliveira,Geyssane Farias de; Caldara,Fabiana Ribeiro; Garcia,Rodrigo Garófallo; Seno,Leonardo de Oliveira; Marcon,Ádila Vasconcelos; Foppa,Luciana; Martins,Renata Aparecida; Crone,Carla.
ABSTRACT The objective of this work was to study the behavior of swine females in the grower phase using different observation intervals (continuous, 5, and 10 min). A total of 42 swine were used, 14 of them for each treatment, which were identified with a marker stick. These animals were observed using the focal sampling method for 5 h. The treatments were the observation intervals: continuous, every 5 min, and every 10 min. Among the behaviors analyzed during the experiment, the different observation intervals did not affect the estimated time spent in the activities. Time observation intervals of 10 min or less adequately describe the duration of the main behavioral parameters of female pigs in this setting.
